The Riddler’s pre-criminal background remains a mystery, although an array of (largely contradictory) explanations for his fascination with riddles exist. Regardless of his origin, Edward Nigma’s criminal activities were inspired by simple boredom; crossword puzzles and Rubik's cubes were too simple. Crime—and plotting ways to get away with crimes—provided an appropriately stimulating challenge.
Edward Nigma joined Gotham’s villainous ranks for profit and for the challenge that attempting to outwit Batman provided. He delighted in luring Batman into death traps that challenged the hero’s intelligence and seldom failed to leave riddles hinting at his next criminal escapade for Batman and Gotham’s police force to find. Unfortunately, these riddles inevitably helped Batman foil the Riddler’s otherwise ingenious plots. Although Nigma came close to accomplishing his objectives several times, he was almost always apprehended and placed in the Arkham Asylum, only to escape and wreak later havoc.
Most of the Riddler’s crimes have been relatively harmless thefts. His primary objective was to lure the Batman into a battle of wits; through his career, however, he has amassed a fortune from his criminal activities. Nigma also occasionally served for an informant for anyone willing to pay, regardless of their goals or moral alignment.
When committing crimes, the Riddler depended largely upon the aid of Query and Echo, two petty thieves with considerable fighting prowess. While the voluptuous duo seemed content with their job and joined Nigma on countless heists, they eventually betrayed him. The Riddler has had numerous allies besides Query and Echo, including the Cluemaster and, on occasion, Batman himself, but his alliances were always brief. His wits, along with a healthy sense of self-preservation, did not make him the most trustworthy of partners.
Outside of Arkham and his villainous career, Edward Nigma has made attempts at living a lawful civilian life. Most attempts at reform, however, end as soon as the cozy life he can afford to live as a free man becomes boring. The Riddler has tried to fulfill his riddling compulsion, both by aiding Batman in the apprehension of other criminals and by taunting the Batman with ominous, cryptic threats accompanied by innocent, legal actions. Nigma himself recognized his inability to stop creating riddles as a problem.

The only weapon the Riddler carries (usually) is a cane with a question-mark at the end, although he has been known to use gimmicky weapons like exploding puzzle pieces against his foes.
He has some technical genius and generally uses it to devise deathtraps for Batman and Robin. Other abilities include strategizing, manipulating technology and numbers, and a certain talent for puns and other forms of wordplay. The Riddler also has near-limitless financial resources thanks to the money he has acquired from years of criminal pursuits.

Edward Nigma presents himself as a clever--if scheming--individual with an inflated ego and a snappy sense of style. While he tries to maintain a cool and collected persona, he’s not above begging or running away from danger in the interest of preserving his life. His intelligence makes him a dangerous man, but his compulsive desire to leave incriminating riddles also makes him largely ineffective as a super villain. While these riddles are his trademark, they are also an overpowering force in his life. He’s not physically capable of committing a crime without giving a warning beforehand.
Criminal traits aside, the Riddler is capable of being a decent human. He knows his henchpersons by name and doesn’t treat them as indispensably as other villains tend to; in fact, his regular minions seem to enjoy working for him. Nigma also tries to keep the fatalities of his crimes to a minimum, although an occasional casualty is sometimes unavoidable. To him, complex crimes are an art, and murder is a game reserved for unimaginative thugs.
The source of Edward Nigma’s lack of popularity (with villains and heroes alike) stems from his willingness to manipulate events and people to save himself. He will change sides if it seems beneficial, and has a deep sense of self-preservation. Ironically, the Riddler’s concern for himself usually leads to brutal beatings, as he tends to double-cross people with short tempers and considerable strength.
The Riddler’s primary motivation for committing crimes is in the mental challenge that going against Batman provides. Like any genius, daily life becomes boring; by drawing Batman into mental battles with riddles and wordplay, Edward Nigma is able to satiate his boredom while butting heads with the only man who can provide him with an intellectual challenge. Given an appropriately engaging challenge, the Riddler’s brilliance could be used to better Gotham.
